On May 1, activist Serhiy Sternenko was attacked with firearms. The assailant was promptly apprehended. Journalists showed a video of the shot at the public figure.

In the photos, the assailant is seen waiting for the activist at the exit of the building before opening fire. But the security service prevented the murder of the activist.

Sternenko underwent surgery. According to him, the bullets did not hit vital organs and exited through and through.

In 2018, there were three more assassination attempts on his life. On May 24, 2018, two unknown individuals attacked him near his home and inflicted several knife wounds. As a result of the assassination attempt, he sustained a concussion, a laceration on his arm, and several bruises.

One of the brazen assailants, Ivan Kuznetsov, died due to the activist's self-defense actions. The second, Oleksandr Isaykul, was injured and later arrested. The third person, Oleksandr Podobyedov, was questioned by the police.

On June 11, 2020, Sternenko received a notice of suspicion for murder and illegal possession of cold weapons. The security service doubted his version of self-defense. However, on February 10, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned the conviction for illegal handling of weapons against Serhiy Sternenko.

In late December 2023, Sternenko reported that the case regarding his self-defense was closed by the Prymorsky District Court of Odesa.
