Will the number of Ukrainians be halved? The demographer explained why we should not believe the forecasts.

The director of the Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Ella Libanova, asserts that forecasts regarding the demographic situation in Ukraine are uncertain. According to her, it is not worth focusing on figures that predict a population decrease to 25 million by 2050. These forecasts depend on the development of the war and the fulfillment of peace conditions. Moreover, she emphasized the need to create appropriate social status for refugees who arrived in Ukraine to change their decision regarding emigration.
Ella Libanova also noted that Ukraine needs to restructure its economy as it cannot achieve a population of 50 or 40 million citizens. She highlighted the importance of population density for the country's demographics. Before the invasion of hostile forces, there was an average of 1.2 children per woman of childbearing age in Ukraine, but after the onset of the invasion, this figure dropped to 0.9.
