Test of Traffic Rules for the Attentive - Who Passes the Intersection First
Test of Traffic Rules for the Attentive - Who Passes the Intersection First
The task is about passing an intersection and knowledge of general traffic rules. Who among the drivers will be the first to pass the intersection in the situation depicted in the image?

The task was suggested by the channel Exist.ua.

Answer Options

  1. The driver of the red car.
  2. The driver of the yellow taxi.
  3. The driver of the green car.

Task Analysis

At the intersection, the taxi driver turns left, while the drivers of the red and yellow cars go straight.

There are no traffic lights or priority signs at the intersection. However, this is not an intersection of equal roads, as the driver of the red car is coming from an unpaved road, and thus a secondary road, so they will pass through the section last.

Let’s read clause 1.10 of the Traffic Rules:

'Main road - a road with a pavement in relation to an unpaved one or marked by a priority sign. The presence of pavement on a secondary road immediately before the intersection does not equate it to the intersected road.'

The driver of the green car must yield to the yellow taxi, as the taxi driver is approaching from the right side.

Let’s read clause 16.12 of the Traffic Rules:

'At an intersection of equal roads, the driver of a non-railway vehicle must yield to the vehicles approaching from the right, except for intersections where circular movement is organized.'

Correct Answer

No.2

Earlier we offered problems for checking knowledge of traffic rules:

  • Tricky Traffic Rules Test: how to make a left turn?
  • Express Traffic Rules Test: who must yield at the roundabout?

This answer discusses the situation at the intersection, where, despite the absence of traffic lights and priority signs, the driver of the yellow taxi has the advantage and can pass the intersection first since they are coming from the main road, approaching the green car.
