About 270 thousand pilgrims gathered at the Portuguese shrine of Fatima to pray for the newly elected Pope Leo XIV and for peace in the world. This was reported by 'Glavkom' referring to Reuters.

The believers arrived from Portugal, Spain, Poland, as well as from distant countries such as the USA, Paraguay, Mauritius, and Taiwan.

First pilgrimage after the election of Pope Leo XIV

This pilgrimage has become the first after the election of American Cardinal Robert Prevost to the papal throne under the name Leo XIV.

Reuters reminds that in his first Sunday speech, the Pope called on world powers to end wars and establish peace.

In particular, he expressed support for a ceasefire in Ukraine and Gaza, and also spoke about a truce between India and Pakistan.

Hope for the continuation of the predecessor's path

The pilgrims expressed hope that the new Pope would continue the path of his predecessor Francis, focusing on humanity and sincerity.

Every year on May 12 and 13, thousands of pilgrims visit Fatima to honor the first apparition of the Virgin Mary to three shepherds in 1917.

Conversation of the President of Ukraine with Pope Leo XIV

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, had his first conversation with Pope Leo XIV.

‘I spoke with Pope Leo XIV. It was our first conversation, but already very warm and truly substantial. I thanked him for supporting Ukraine and all our people. We greatly appreciate His Holiness's words about the need to achieve a just and lasting peace for our country and the release of prisoners,’ Zelensky stated.

Pope Leo XIV's address to the believers

It should be noted that in his first Sunday midday blessing as Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV addressed the believers in St. Peter's Square, calling for the establishment of a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Pope Leo XIV firmly opposed the war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine, describing it as 'imperialist in nature.' He made this statement in the early days of his pontificate.

Condemnation of the Russian invasion

In his first interview published on May 9, the newly elected Pontiff condemned the Russian invasion, emphasizing that it is a deliberate attempt at territorial seizure motivated by the desire for power.

Pope Leo XIV's active participation in international political affairs and his advocacy for peace and justice testify to his significant role in shaping global public opinion. His open support for Ukraine and demands for an end to conflicts offer hope for the onset of stability and global tranquility.
