German military bases near Cologne and Geilenkirchen were cordoned off due to suspicions of sabotage and possible water poisoning. On the morning of August 14, the German Air Force barracks were sealed off due to suspicions of sabotage. An unknown man might have infiltrated the barracks and poisoned the water. A hole was found in the fence, and there were malfunctions in the water supply system. Military and civilian personnel were no longer allowed inside, and soldiers were forbidden to drink tap water. The barracks have their own water supply system, so local residents weren't affected. The barracks near Cologne serve as command posts for Bundeswehr military and civilian agencies, as well as a base for the Ministry of Defense's Air Force. About 1,200 civilians and 4,300 military personnel work in these barracks. On the same day, access to the NATO airbase in Geilenkirchen was also closed due to suspicions of sabotage and the inspection of drinking water contamination. The barracks in Geilenkirchen have their own water pumping station, so there is no danger to civilian residents. NATO reconnaissance aircraft are based at the airbase. An investigation is currently underway. Additionally, three citizens of Armenia, Ukraine, and Russia were detained in Frankfurt am Main on suspicion of spying for a foreign intelligence service.
