Germany elected a new chancellor
The lower house of the German parliament elected the leader of the Christian Democrats, Friedrich Merz, as the new chancellor after the second attempt.
Merz managed to secure victory with 325 votes from Bundestag deputies at the session on May 6. This came after a failure during the morning vote, when he was only 6 votes short of the required majority.
This incident was unprecedented for Germany, as the CDU/CSU and SPD coalition had 328 deputies at that Time, but still could not elect a chancellor on the first attempt.
After the failure of the first vote, the session was temporarily interrupted, but then a second round took place, in which Merz was elected as the Federal Chancellor of Germany.
